  18. <p>     Boardrooms were buzzing from Bangkok to Boston last week
  19. over word of an impending alliance between industrial
  20. powerhouses Daimler-Benz and Mitsubishi. Daimler-Benz, maker
  21. of the best-selling Mercedes-Benz automobiles and a partner in
  22. the Airbus consortium, is West Germany's largest industrial
  23. group. Mitsubishi, with interests ranging from electronics to
  24. real estate, surpasses all of its Japanese rivals. Emerging
  25. from talks in Singapore, representatives of the two firms said
  26. they are negotiating joint ventures that would link their
  27. businesses in the auto, aerospace and consumer-electronics
  28. industries.

  30. <p>     Such alliances could help Daimler-Benz spruce up its
  31. consumer-electronics group and afford entry to Japan's domestic
  32. markets. Mitsubishi would position itself for 1992's united
  33. European market and, with access to Daimler aircraft
  34. technology, might enter the commercial aircraft field--a
  35. dream come true for the Japanese but a nightmare for Boeing.
